Robert Ravi has taken charge from 15 July 2024. Robert Ravi will be the young chairman and managing director of BSNL. He has 34 years of experience. He has been the Additional General Manager of BSNL for 6 years. Recently he was made the Deputy Director General of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). He has been an advisor on consumer affairs and quality of service of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
Robert Ravi has done engineering from Pondicherry University, he has been a gold medalist of that university. He has also done MBA in International Business.
Ravi has contributed in many ways to the telecom sector. Ravi has worked to increase the standards and quality of service in the telecom sector. He has also contributed to the regulation and growth of value-added services.
Robert Ravi has designed an integrated communication network project (FTTN, WiFi, WLAN, VoIP) for Pondicherry University. He has designed the PSWAN project for the Pondicherry government. He also implemented it successfully.
Ravi has been appointed CMD of BSNL at a time when BSNL is facing a loss of about Rs 1,569 crore. In such a situation, Ravi will have the challenge of making BSNL profitable. For this, BSNL will have to cut down its expenses. This is probably the reason why MTNL is being closed down as an independent business and brought under the purview of BSNL.
After falling behind in competition with Jio and Airtel, BSNL is coming back on track. It is also preparing itself afresh to compete with Jio and Airtel. For this, the central government has started preparations at many levels. In this, along with giving responsibility to the youth, work is being done towards bringing the scattered business together.
In BSNL, Ravi will face the challenge of rolling out 4G services across the country. BSNL's experience will come in handy for Ravi in this. Also, the technology of 4G services should be developed in such a way that it can be used for 5G. Currently, Jio and Airtel dominate the telecom sector, and Ravi will play an important role in building BSNL against them.
The central government has placed its bet on Ravi for the appointment of BSNL CMD. BSNL Chairman and Managing Director P K Purwar had applied for an extension, but the government has refused to extend his extension. Purwar was made the CMD of BSNL in July 2019.
